All-Laser Cataract Surgery
There is now a revolutionary customized way to perform cataract surgery. The Alcon LenSx® Laser is a fully-integrated, image-guided femtosecond laser (blade-free) designed specifically for refractive cataract surgery. The LenSx® Laser is the first femtosecond laser cleared by the FDA for use in cataract surgery. Using a customizable 3-D surgical platform, it allows cataract surgeons to visualize, customize and perform many of the most challenging steps of cataract surgery. There are essentially three key patient benefits of the femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery versus traditional manual cataract surgery: (1) The laser provides a more precise circular incision around the cataract, improves the accuracy during placement of the intraocular lens implant, and leads to a greater likelihood of clearer vision. (2) The laser pre-softens the cataract, allowing surgeons to minimize the use of ultrasound energy to remove the cataract lens. Decrease usage of ultrasound energy reduces the chances of thermal injury to tissues inside the eye which lessens recovery time. (3) Astigmatism correction can be done on the same setting with cataract surgery using this laser as opposed to a manual incision. Correcting astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery lessens the potential need for glasses subsequently.
What this new technology essentially means for patients: A faster post-operative recovery time with even greater patient satisfaction in the visual outcome.
